The Monument and the Bungalow

One thing I found interesting about the essay is the fact that he teaches you a new way to look at the landscapes around you that make up this world. When we move through our surroundings there are many times we never take a minute to look and take everything in. This new way of learning is exciting to me because I am not a very visual person and now I can practice on how to become one. I think we are so busy with our daily lives and schedules that not a lot of people take the time to look at what’s around them. I would like to learn more on how to read landscapes, what to look for and the importance of each aspect.
The first percept is called cultivating the habit of attention which is where the students need to develop and cultivate the habit of using their eyes and asking nonjudgmental questions about familiar, commonplace things. His first job was to teach the students how to read landscape, to help them develop thoughtful looking and asking questions about what they see in the ordinary landscape they inhabit.
The second percept is called acquiring vocabulary because if students are going to look at the elements of a landscape they have to have the vocabulary that allows them to describe things accurately. One important term used is alluvial fan which is where the person knows what the feature looks like, how it came to be, what it’s made of, and how the feature relates to the surrounding elements in the landscape.
Overall I enjoyed reading this essay because as a person in this world I have never taken the time to look at my surroundings and to take the time to observe what each element means. Yeah there is a lot you can take in about the world and I am all about learning more. There are more than just trees, water and streets; it’s about the way you perceive all of it.
